Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board: Indian Leadership for Indian Health

Western Tobacco Prevention Project

Mission, Vision and Values:

The Western Tobacco Prevention Project (WTPP) is dedicated to provide up-to-date and culturally appropriate tobacco education and information to people working in tribal communities. We welcome you to use these resources to develop local programs and strengthen communication lines between tribes, state and local governments, national organizations, and the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board (NPAIHB).

The WTPP’s vision is to enhance the wellness of American Indian and Alaska Native communities by providing culturally appropriate tobacco education and prevention resources through training, technical support, collaboration and advocacy with a commitment to excellence.

The historic and enduring relationship with sacred tobacco must be recognized and addressed when shaping meaningful, culturally appropriate tobacco-related policies in American Indian and Alaska Native communities.

WTPP Priorities include:

  • Promoting respect for the sacred use of tobacco
  • Promoting cessation services
  • Countering tobacco company advertising on tribal lands
  • Reducing exposure to second hand smoke
  • Preventing Youth initiation
  • Creating culturally appropriate materials for prevention and cessation programs

Activities:

  • Provide culturally appropriate training.
  • Provide technical assistance.
  • Disseminate culturally appropriate tobacco education information, cessation guides and material resources.
  • Support partnerships between states, counties, private organizations and tribes.

Funding:

Funding for the WTPP is provided by the Washington State Department of Health’s Tobacco Prevention and Education Program (Contract # N12228).
